Tarot Number Cards - The Basics of the Threes

The threes for me are the tricker of the numbered cards to understand. The best way for me to explain it is to think of the pyramid with the three corners. At the top you have yourself, the decision maker, the one who has the options or choices before them. Beneath in one corner we have path A and in the other corner path B. Each path with its pros and cons. As we reflect on what we have learned about the twos - the fact finding number cards, we now face the threes, the phase in which we take that first step.

Now, the idea behind the triangle and the threes is that we form a sense of balance in our path toward our goal. Whatever the twos indicated, whatever that decision we had to make during the twos phase, be it love, career, etc ... we now have the threes, which are telling us we have made the first step toward it, so we now must find a balanced path to succeed!
The Empress card rules over the threes in tarot. The Empress is known in tarot as the creator! You see, you are, like the empress, creating your path toward your goals and it must be done with balance in order to find your success. This means while you are headed toward what you desire you must see both sides of things. As you “stand” at the top of your pyramid looking down at the two points on either side, remember, sometimes it is necessary to walk a strait line down the middle, while other times you path may lead more toward one direction or the other. The Empress, who rules the threes, being the creator that she is also is a caretaker who must nurture.
Remember however although the Empress who rules over the threes is a motherly nurturing type there is only one letter difference between mother and smother! We must be patient! We must have that balance as mentioned many times here in order to reach our goals! Over worry, over nurturing, stressing, obsessing are all going too far toward the negative path!
Isn’t that how life is though!? A bit of a twisting path but when we have a good balance and sense of control of that path we more easily arrive at our desired destination.
With that said - the Threes in tarot are indicative of knowing the balance we must maintain and remembering to nurture ourselves and the goals we are striving to achieve without obsessing over them!

Here is her interesting take on the Threes.

The meaning of Three is about the union of two parts to create a unique whole. That point of union forms the fruit of knowledge -it is our access point to unlimited potential.
It is no accident that all the mystic teachings incorporate the power of three within their folds. Three represents the union of the numbers prior to it (One and Two). Numerologically speaking, if One represents force, and Two represents an opening, then Three is the birthing of true wisdom.
Manly Hall said "Three is the equilibrium of the unities." We see this in innumerable forms:
  • Spirit, Mind, Body
  • Father, Son, Holy Ghost
  • Mother, Father, Child
  • Past, Present, Future
  • Power, Intellect, Love
  • Creator, Destroyer, Sustainer
  • Creation, Preservation, Destruction
  • Thought, Feeling, Emotion

Just to name a few occurances of trinities in esoteric perspectives.
The meaning of Three deals with finding the right mix between the two founding pillars of our life constsruct. In the cards we see the meaning of three as a sort of culmination.
We can look to the triangle for assistance here. If we see the process of growth as a triangle, we move up lateral sides to reach the tip, essentially ascending to the top by incorporating our duality. By working together, we find unity. Conversely, we may descend the philosophical triangle in order to reach the source. This is still done by unifying our strongest attributes.
The meaning of Three reminds us we are all connected and it is only through this connection that progress can be made. To further our understanding of Three, we may meditate upon these questions - please keep in mind - these are highly conceptual questions. I'm asking you to think in terms of intangibles rather than solid experience:

  • Are the sum of my parts working together towards unified glory?
  • How can I find strength through the sacred trinity?
  • If I had to assign philosophical meanings to each side of a triangle, what would they be? Why?
  • How can I utilize this philosophical triangle to propel me into an existence on a higher level?
  • What does it feel like to be in between
  • What is my concept of time? Friend or foe? How does this affect my life?
  • What kind of structure do I have in place that secures my spiritual evolution?

Even though Three's are fantastic tools for structure and order, the energy of Three asks us to loosen our minds - remove ourselves from rigidity and construct in order to fully experience the cosmic nature of what the Three represents.
Three is about creation, and making something astounding out of the resources available. In order to utilize the meaning of Three to do this, it requires a relaxed, playful attitude. Keep this in mind as you review the following meanings.

Common associations with the meaning of Three:
Potential Personality:
People who resonate with number Three are naturally lucky. They always seem to be in the right place at the right time. They are also opportunistic, and have the ability make good decisions. Three people are highly intuitive and intelligent. Additionally, those with number Three personality traits are highly creative and are excellent communicators. They can be opinionated and manipulative, but they mean well and have the best intentions in most of their undertakings.
